MEAP supports audio and moving image digitization projects around the world as an important part of our work to preserve at risk cultural heritage. Below are a list of completed AV projects. Audio Collections

African Studies Ibadan Audiovisual and Arabic Manuscripts Archives, University of Ibadan (Nigeria)
An audiovisual archive held at the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan documents a range of rites, performances, and historical events as well as recorded oral histories that describe life and practices from Nigeria and West Africa more broadly. These original recordings include an Ozid epic of the Ijaw, Urhobo Udjesongs, Yoruba Geleda, theaters of Duro Ladipo.

Recordings of Hereditary Musicians of Western Rajasthan (India): Musical and oral traditions

The Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology (ARCE) at the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) has digitizing hundreds of audio cassettes dating from 1980 to 2003 that preserve musical and oral traditions of the desert populations in Western Rajasthan. The collection includes ballads, oral epics, and storytelling by hereditary musician castes recorded by Komal Kothari.

The Ricardo Montejano Collection (Mexico): Social Movements and Mexican Rural and Native Cultures

Starting in the 1970s, Ricardo Montejano has collected original field and studio recordings of the voices of various populations in Mexico. His work, made accessible in this collection, illuminates a history of social movements and indigenous knowledge throughout the country. These audio recordings document political and cultural realities of Mexican people.

Moving Image Collections

Film Collection of the News Program "El Mundo al Dia" (Dominican Republic)

The news program “El Mundo al Día” was aired on the first television station in the Dominican Republic from 1954-1996. During those years, "El Mundo al Día" broadcast daily to the nation, capturing and documenting significant events in the Dominican Republic throughout the 20th Century. This collection includes videos from 396 film containers from the collection of the news program “El Mundo al Día" (1950s-1980s).

Planning Grants for Film Collections

The Carlos Alonso Collection(opens in a new tab) (Uruguay)

The "Alonso Collection," owned by the Archivo Nacional de la Imagen y la Palabra (SODRE), consists of forty-five rolls of nitrate film, shot in a documentary style throughout the countryside of Uruguay between 1920 and 1940. The project team from Cine Casero have created a detailed inventory, technical assessment, and full collection report.

The Shabistan Film Archive(opens in a new tab) (India)

As traditional cinema in India transitioned to an era of digital film, physical reels grew out of fashion and were often abandoned and left to deteriorate. This collection of film reels preserves diverse regional images on film from across post-independence India.
