About the Project

The House of Afro-Uruguayan Culture
Project Grant

The House of Afro-Uruguayan Culture (Montevideo, Uruguay), contains paper-based documents and recordings (audio and film) on the Black political and social organizations in Uruguay from mid-twentieth century to the present, as well as records on Afro-Uruguayan genealogies (family history) making this repository unique in Latin America. While state and church records provide a fragmentary glimpse on the life of Black populations during slavery, the archive of the House of Afro-Uruguayan Culture documents the Black struggle for equality and recognition in region, and the histories of family formation supporting Black social organizations.
