About the Project
This project will document and digitize the sound archives of Rádio Libertação. The archive includes more than 500 open reel and cassette/cartridge ferric oxide tapes of radio broadcasts originally produced for Portuguese, Creole, Balanta, Biafada, Mankanya, Manejo and Mandinka audiences in Guinea-Bissau. These broadcasts cover eleven years’ worth of radio activity emitted in exile from neighboring Republic of Guinea. They were moved from Conakry in 1974 and relocated to Bissau where they face deterioration and obsolecscence. They are a significant primary source, preserving Rádio Libertação’s role in the liberation war. In particular, the collection is a resource for understanding the role of propaganda advancing state formation under armed conflict.
