About the Project

An Archive of Chile's Graphic Resistance from the Tallersol Cultural Centre
Planning Grant

The Tallersol Cultural Centre in Chile, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, will catalogue their graphic design archive which includes posters, bulletins, postcards, leaflets, and pamphlets for human rights, political, social and cultural organizations. The center was created in 1977 by a collective of artists, cultural activists and political opponents eager to resist military repression. The archive itself represents the artistic resistance movement that took place throughout the late 20th century.

--

Thinking Inside the Box 1973

Thinking Inside the Box 1973 is a project that joins students from King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, the University of Leeds and the University of Liverpool to reflect on the events on 1973 in Latin America by interacting with archives. These archives included The Institute of Popular Music’s archive at the University of Liverpool, the Senate House Library at the University of London and the 150 Tallersol images digitized with funding from MEAP.

The project was student led, and the Leeds students chose to run four political poster-making workshops(opens in a new tab) in Leeds with the public. Two were at the City Art Gallery and two more were in arts venues in the city. Students connected with Antonio Kadima at Tallersol over Zoom to learn more about producing political posters and running a poster-making workshop. The workshops included Tallersol posters, along with items from the Liverpool collection of Latin American music of hope and struggle, as inspiration for our 21st century poster-makers. The posters produced are now being exhibited in Leeds(opens in a new tab).
