About the Project

Digitizing and Georeferencing the Archives of the Niterói Herbarium (NIT): Mapping Socio-Environmental Change
Planning Grant

The Niterói Herbarium (NIT), established in 1977, is a botanical collection that offers a glimpse into Brazil’s socio-environmental history. The Federal Fluminense University (UFF) acquired the archive in 2017 and associated it with existing xylaria and microscope-slide collections. These materials are used for research and teaching on environmental conservation and ethno-botanical knowledge in Brazil’s most urbanized region. Besides serving traditional herbarium purposes, usually related to taxonomy, the NIT represents an effort by botanists and geographers to rethink the meanings of environmental archives amidst climate crisis and develop registers of socio-environmental change oriented towards environmental justice.
