About the Project
Los Subterráneos, or "The Subterraneans”, is the earliest known archive of Cuban amateur cinema, with films spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s on substandard formats (Super 8 and 16 mm) and magnetic tapes. This unique material, consisting of not only films, but also scripts, photographs, and documents, records historically and culturally relevant events for Cuba, yet lacks the support or protection of any Cuban institution. The digitization of Los Subterráneos seeks to promote community interaction with these materials and contribute to the enrichment of film education both in Cuba and internationally. Collaboration with the community and the inclusion of additional non-filmic materials, such as interviews with filmmakers, scripts, articles, and essays about these pieces, further enhances the global understanding of this phenomenon.
