About the Project

Digitization of the newspaper "Tīkkatir"
Project Grant

This project aims to digitize issues from Tikkatir, a Tamil political newspaper published from 1978 to 2010. Tikkatir began in 1963 as a weekly publication, originally funded by Coimbatore mill workers. When the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was formed in 1964, Tīkkatir became the official publication of the Party's Tamilnadu state committee. The newspaper documents the voices and struggles of the masses, laborers, farmers, and women. Covering not only the local issues but also the left's view on national and international affairs as well as stories and editorials by several Communist and Marxist intellectuals, the newspaper is considered as one of the important source materials for social and political studies in Tamil Nadu.
