Archival Materials at the Cham Cultural Research Center (Vietnam)
Planning Grant

This project will survey and document materials currently held by the Cham Cultural Research Center in Ninh Thuan, Vietnam that reflect the history, literature, art, customs, rituals and folk knowledge of the Cham. The collection includes Cham manuscripts, magazines and books on Cham culture, images of the Cham people from festivals and everyday life in the 1960s and 1970s stored on microfilm, and audio cassettes and VHS tapes of Cham people in the 1990s.

The project team identified objects of different genres, material types, and storage format, etc. All materials were collected in two periods from 1968 - 1975 and 1993-1999. These bursts of collecting amassed collections aabout the Cham people and Cham ethnic cultural heritage. The collection has been stored at the Cham Cultural Research Center since 1968 and remains a primary focus of the Center since its re-established in 1993.

The team worked to identify different material types and classify different subcollections, including manuscripts, photographs and slides, cassette tapes and magnetic tapes.
