About the Project
The Central Film Library of the Information Services Department of Ghana contains a series of native video recordings, taped on VHS, Super VHS, and Betacam, that capture the social, cultural, and political activities of Ghana. These materials were created during a period in Ghanaian history in which a previously closed celluloid production industry became democratized and led to a boom in AV content, including documentaries, movies, and new coverage by filmmakers of diverse backgrounds. Today, these tapes are in an obsolete medium, endangering them to deterioration. This project will digitize this collection, making publicly accessible materials that were once marked to be destroyed. In addition to general users, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation will also have access to the materials to input into their national cultural productions.
