About the Project
In the 1980’s, the Center of African Studies at Eduardo Mondlane University (CEA) became a new African hub for transnational activism and knowledge production. 350 audio-cassettes, recently found in the center’s basement, reflect that vibrant and prolific intellectual life. This archive contains oral history, recording of political speeches, and lectures by various local and international scholars. This project will rescue these important records of Mozambique’s intellectual history. This project will produce an inventory and pilot digitization of the material found by the CEA, focusing particularly on the Mozambique socialist era (1975-1990).

Sound Archives from Eduardo Mondlane University
This project successfully organized and inventoried 330 audio-cassettes produced between the 1976 and late 2000’s at the Centre for African Studies (CEA-UEM) in Maputo, Mozambique. These sound recordings are related to Mozambique’s history in the context of southern Africa and the liberation struggles across the African continent. They include, for instance, interviews with peasants and urban workers about life under colonialism and during the liberation struggle, recordings of academic seminars, lectures by prominent African intellectuals, political speeches by national leaders, and many more.

- Reference document(opens in a new tab)
Among these recordings are approximately 180 tapes containing oral histories of Mozambique’s liberation struggle, including interviews with former guerrilla fighters, women, peasants, and elders who lived under Portuguese colonial rule.
Collection of written and visual materials, including memos, field notes, interview transcripts, reports, and photographs, that provide important context for the sound archive.
These recordings capture a rare intellectual moment in which Mozambican and international scholars debated how to write national history beyond official narratives. These tapes symbolize the critical and self-reflective spirit of the CEA’s early years and represent a powerful reminder of the need to preserve and reinterpret these intellectual legacies.
