Brochures of Theatre Productions in Post Independence India

This project will digitize performance brochures, dating from 1946 to the present, that record intense experimentation by a transitioning post-independence society to forge an essentially Indian modern theater. Collected through personal effort from theater practitioners and groups all over India, these brochures provide details of the plays performed in this period and also constitute a rich anthropological source of what and who sustained serious theater in small and big cities of India. These brochures are the single most significant record, not available elsewhere, of the trajectory of Indian theater in the last 80 years.
