About the Project
The Project for the Recovery of Historical Memory (REMHI) collected materials documenting the serious human rights violations resulting from armed conflict in Guatemala from 1973 into the 1990s. These materials were used to issue the official report of the Human Rights Office of the Archdiocese of Guatemala (ODHAG): "Guatemala Never Again!" This project will digitize the REMHI collection, including documentation related to the first exhumations carried out in the early 1990s, photographic material on various aspects of the internal armed conflict such as massacres, refugee return processes (communities of population in resistance, CPR) and photographic material that bears witness to the repression and persecution of human rights defenders, including the assassination of Monseñor Juan Gerardi.
The project will also digitize materials from the the National Reconciliation Commission (CNR) archive to preserve and make public documents related to the peace process. The importance of this project lies in preserving and sharing documents that expose patterns of human rights abuses as well as details about specific cases to hold perpetrators accountable and honor the memory of the victims.
