About the Project

This project aimed to preserve, digitize, and disseminate the collection of Alejandro Del Conte (Argentina, 1897-1952), a central figure in cinematographic and photographic arts during the first half of the 20th century, and one of the first to contribute a Latin American perspective to Fotoclubismo. His discarded archive was rescued by Alfredo Srur, director of Fundación CIFHA, and contains numerous documents related to his cinematic work in northern Argentina, including the creation of the magazine Film Grafico (Tucuman, 1917) and his role as editor of Correo Fotografico Sudamericano (Buenos Aires, 1921-1959), one of the most important photography magazines in Ibero-America.
Thanks to the grant provided by UCLA, we have managed to digitize and make freely and openly accessible 938 documentary units (more than 16.000 digitized items) related to the magazines edited by Del Conte, as well as his personal and professional photographs (linked to his work as a film director and graphic editor), manuscripts, scripts·, notes, programs, press clippings, and various correspondence. The digitization of these materials will allow scholars and researchers around the world to access the history of photography in Latin America-an area still largely undocumented in contrast to Europe or the United States. Fotoclubismo played a crucial role in this regard.
The valorization of Alejandro Del Conte's archive enabled the construction of a sensitive and critical cartography of his work, which transcends mere documentary order to become a field of research. A complex, dispersed, and at-risk archival collection was recovered, organized, and cataloged, safeguarding key materials for understanding Argentine photographic practices from a non-hegemonic perspective.
This work not only ensured the physical preservation of the documents but also activated potential meanings and connections through their study, classification, and curatorial arrangement. A living archive was consolidated-one that dialogues with the present and opens up new avenues for reading, research, and dissemination. Moreover, it helped bring visibility to Alejandro Del Conte as a photographer deeply engaged with the social and political processes of his time, situating his production within the framework of collective memory.
This process involved both the material preservation and the reconstruction of the historical and aesthetic narrative of his work, fulfilling the goal of providing public access, encouraging critical reflection, and promoting intersections between art, politics, and the archive.

Focus on Correo Fotografico Sudamericano
The photographs and correspondence used in Correo Fotografico Sudamericano have proven especially valuable, as they enable new ways of understanding Del Conte's contributions to the development of modern photography in South America and his connections with both local and international artists.
The collections of Correo Fotografico Sudamericano (1921-1959) and Film Grafico (1917) will be essential resources for rethinking the history of cinema and photography in the region at the beginning of twentieth century. In particular, the 445 issues of Correo Fotografico Sudamericano now online, enables access to an unprecedented source of primary information for Latin American photography studies.
