Curating the Postales Collection

The MEAP funded digitization project, Preserving Tijuana’s Culturo-Historical Archives(opens in a new tab), resulted in the digitization of photographs, documents, postcards, and other materials from Archivo Histórico de Tijuana. This project, a partnership between San Diego State University Library and the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura is just the start of digitization as the team continues to work together to preserve and create access to the extensive collection held in Tijuana. Within the broader digital collection, postcards produced for both Mexican and American audiences, reflect scenes of Tijuana and the Baja California region in the 20th century.

Curating a subcollection of Postales - including over 200 postcards - allows students, community members, researchers and others to access and explore Tijuana's history.

Student Engagement

Students at San Diego State University participated in the curation and exploration of the Postales collection, activating the archival collection for new audiences and deeper engagement.

Trevor Brabyn and Mia Lewis each created part of the metadata for this collection as part of graduate internships at San José State University.

Devina Naik created a Storymap that locates the postcards on a digital map. Naik notes, the "extensive postcard collection of over 200 postcards displaying spirited boulevards, thundering sports arenas, classically magnificent monuments and just about every other corner of this eclectic city...offers people around the world a glimpse into the beauty and richness of Tijuana's culture and landscape and promotes historical literacy among its local communities."
