Newly published article by MEAP Project Lead reflects on grant and the need for archival work in Africa

Cet article revient sur un projet international conduit conjointement par une équipe de recherche, une équipe d’archivistes et le plus vieux syndicat enseignant du Burkina Faso (SNEA-B). En retraçant la collaboration nouée depuis 2021 autour de la conservation des archives de cette organisation syndicale, il invite à réfléchir aux enjeux de l’archivage des luttes africaines, aux tensions que cela génère et à la question du genre des archives militantes. Dressant un bilan du projet, l’article montre combien l’intérêt pour les archives et l’écriture de l’histoire ne sont pas du seul apanage de la recherche et des archivistes. Se réapproprier son histoire comme acteurs/actrices du mouvement social constitue un enjeu de lutte dans un contexte burkinabè où les activités militantes sont largement mises en sommeil.

"In the Archives of Burkina Faso's National Teachers’ Union Archiving Struggles, Writing and Fostering Union History"

This article, published in French, looks back at an international project conducted jointly by a research team, a team of archivists and Burkina Faso’s oldest teachers’ union (SNEA-B). As the paper maps collaboration forged since 2021 around the conservation of this union’s archives, it calls for reflecting on the challenges associated to African struggles’ archival processes, related tensions and the gender of activist archives. Taking stock of the project, the article shows that interest in archives and history writing are not the sole preserve of researchers and archivists. Reappropriating one’s history as a participant in social movements is a key issue in Burkina Faso, as activist activities are largely put on standby.
