Preserving Brazilian Cultural Heritage - Frevo Music Scores | Imago Institute

Captain Zuzinha's Band: Digitization of the manuscripts scores of frevo from the early 20th century as a world heritage

Project Abstract

The project will digitize and make accessible 8,700 original manuscripts of Frevo scores -- a popular music form played by the Military Police during Carnival in Pernambuco. Frevo was declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (2012) and as Intangible Cultural Heritage by IPHAN (2007). As the first formal record of Frevo's creation, this collection (approx. 600 musical arrangements) documents the birth of a Brazilian culture expression. The collection is located at the Memorial Denis Bernardes in the Federal University of Pernambuco, which partnered with Imago Institute, founded by Diego Salcedo (PhD), to ensure long-term preservation and accessibility.
